We hope you will find one of our conveniently scheduled classes will work for you. We are a different kind of driving school. Just ask all of Minnesota's safety experts – AAA Minneapolis and the Minnesota Safety Council plus others. We believe that learning to drive an automobile is one of the most serious responsibilities a teenager undertakes and we take our job as educators seriously.

Classroom sessions are typically 3 hours each and occur after school and in the evening around the metro and in east central Minnesota. Absences are accommodated and we work with all kinds of busy schedules.

Preparing to be a safe, new driver requires a foundation of traffic safety education, parent supervision, and maturity. That is what motivates us to provide the most comprehensive program in the metro area.

We want to remain flexible, but also make the most of this opportunity; therefore we work with families regarding scheduling conflicts.

Minnesota Requirements: 30-hours of classroom education. Our curriculum is professionally designed and is a custom blend of 1) AAA's How to Drive textbook, instructor manual, and PowerPoint presentations, 2) the National Institute of Driver Behavior Model Roadway Simulation and Risk Management System materials, 3) Insurance Institute for Highway Safety materials, 4) Training Wheels Driver Education developed materials and, 5) the Minnesota Driver Manual.

Students are encouraged to fully participate through interactive activities, demonstrations, and assignments. We work with all kinds of learning abilities and styles and have many references and testimonials from parents to support this excellent program. Our goal is to provide a meaningful classroom experience based on the most up to date materials and opportunities.

Behind the Wheel Phase

The State of Minnesota requires 6 hours of in-car training in order to be eligible for a provisional license.  Our program puts the student at the wheel and focuses on risk identification and management, development of defensive driving skills, and turning teens into respectful road users.

Lessons will begin and end at a school district campus or Training Wheels campus.  In addition to 6 hours of instruction, each student will receive an In-Car Instruction Manual©, a written evaluation after each lesson, and a driving experience log. Well-trained, patient instructors conduct the driving sessions.  In fact, we have over 100 years of traffic safety education experience on our staff.

Each two-hour session introduces a new driving environment and skill set using sound education principles. Our vehicles are late model driver training vehicles equipped with dual brakes and instructor rear view mirrors and meet all safety requirements.  We strive to encourage:  1) a young driver's ability to make healthy choices, and 2) structured parental involvement for new drivers as key ingredients to reducing the serious risk of crash during the first 1000 miles of driving a new driver drives.  That is why we encourage the use of our tools such as the In-car Instruction Manual and Student Driving Experience Log.  These are unique to TWDE. Parents are required by the State of MN to provide at least 30 hours of supervised practice driving hours, 10 of these must occur during darkness.

The "nuts and bolts" of Training Wheels Driver Education are also different from other schools.  We have a fully staffed, professional administrative office and administrative procedures.  Our program coordinator is available during normal business hours to help, answer questions, and to help you structure practice time better.  Our computer systems are professionally maintained and backed up and we and we offer online scheduling for your behind the wheel lessons.  We are organized and available, which means we provide excellent customer service.

Training Wheels Driver Education complies with all State bonding and insurance requirements.

Why Go Beyond the Minimum with Parent Seminars, Driver Impact Panels, and Skid Monsters?

Because it takes a broad approach to have the best chance at turning out a safe, mature, reliable teen driving student.  From the beginning we have never felt comfortable advertising and offering the state minimum requirements.  Yes, it takes a bit of time to research your options, come to the parent seminar, driver impact panel, and skid monster, but if you compare it to the lifetime of savings this small investment requires, the choice about who should “teach your kids to drive” would be clear.  Training Wheels knows that parents and caregivers are the most important people and we build on that.  We invite you to compare value when choosing your provider.  And, remember we are license, insured and bonded by all State Requirements.  Our instructors meet and exceed the State Minimum education standards.
